Day 6 Oct 8 - fishing, guitars and rock and roll

We took in our first fishing trip, all 20 mins worth. We did catch a lot of air and a couple of weeds, that's about all.

Then it was back to Memphis for another day of seeing the sights. First up was the Gibson guitar factory just off of Beale street. A nice 45 min tour of the factory where we saw how the hollow body guitars are made. All are built to special order. Much like the Harley motorcycles each guitar is made to order for a particular customer. No two are exactly alike, though they are very similar. Prices range up to 10,000 for an unpainted version. Ironically if it's not painted it costs more. This is because they have to exactly match the woods that make up the instrument. It can take up to a year to get the woods matched from the various shipments that come in. The guitar still has to live up to the no imperfections standard of Gibson. Much harder to achieve if paint can not mask imperfections.

Then off to the Rock and Soul museum for a look at a bit of rock and roll and soul history. It's tough to get a 4 year old interested in a museum for very long.... but we try...

We then headed off to see the ducks at the Peabody hotel. The hotel has some ducks that they usher down from the roof top via elevator, at 10 am, to the main lobby where they paddle around in a small fountain for 6 hours before they are ushered back up at 5 pm. Apparently what started as a prank in the 1930's has become somewhat of a tradition. A large crowd had gathered for the 5 pm show. Rose and Susan were able to snatch front row seats at the red carpet. However, the ducks were in a hurry to clock out for the day and did not stop for autographs.... :o(

Dinner on the second floor patio of Author's overlooking Beale street. Ribs, chicken, pulled pork.

It's a good thing we ate at the BB King restaurant the other night as they had a kitchen fire which promises to keep them closed for the foreseeable future. Timing is everything I hear.

home by 8 pm.
